What does a balloon payment on a car loan actually cost me?

A balloon (or residual) is principal pushed to the end of the term. Your weekly payment carries the interest on it, which is why the payment looks low, but it repays none of the balloon itself. To own the car outright you must also save the lump. A $6,000 balloon over five years is an extra $23.08 a week you need to set aside on top of the quoted payment.

How do I find the interest rate if the dealer only quotes a weekly payment?

Given the amount financed, the term, any balloon and the weekly payment, there is exactly one interest rate that fits, and it can be solved for numerically. In New Zealand, secured bank car loans run roughly 9% to 19% a year and finance companies from about 6.7% up to 30%, so the solved rate tells you which end of that range you are being offered.

Do diesel and electric cars cost more to register in New Zealand?

Yes. From 1 July 2026 a 12-month licence costs $181.45 for a petrol car and $248.83 for a diesel or electric vehicle, because the ACC motor vehicle levy component is higher. Diesel and electric vehicles also pay road user charges by distance, which petrol cars do not.

Is petrol road tax added on top of the pump price in New Zealand?

No — it is already inside it. Petrol excise duty is 70.024 cents a litre before GST, about 80.5 cents once GST is added, and it is included in the price on the sign. Diesel carries no excise; diesel vehicles pay road user charges instead, currently $76 per 1,000 km for a light vehicle.

From 1 November 2026, light vehicles aged 4 to 14 years first registered on or after 1 November 2019 move to two-yearly inspections, and vehicles over 26 years old move from six-monthly to annual. From 1 November 2027 the two-yearly band extends to vehicles first registered from 1 November 2013. Vehicles aged 14 to 26 years stay on annual inspections.

Is a cheaper weekly payment always the cheaper car?

No. A lower quoted payment usually means a longer term, a larger balloon, or both. Two listings of the same model a year apart can be quoted $89 and $95 a week, and the $89 one cost $15.75 a week more once its $6,000 balloon, running costs and statutory charges are counted — about $819 a year.

The cheaper weekly payment is often the dearer car.
